According to a Citizen Data poll commissioned by Unite America, about two-thirds of voters agree that independent voters should be able to participate in taxpayer-funded partisan primaries. That includes 65.9% of Republicans, 63.5% of Democrats, and 72.4% of independents.
Independent voters in 15 states do not have a guaranteed right to vote in primaries for state and congressional offices, and in 22 states they don’t have the legal right to participate in presidential primaries.
Citizen Data sampled 1,001 registered voters in September 2023 as part of its monthly omnibus survey. The margin of error is +/- 3.1%. Results are weighted on party ID, race, age, and education. For more information, contact press@uniteamerica.org.
