Bipartisan “Let America Vote Act” Represents Single Greatest Expansion of Voting Rights in Half a Century

New federal legislation would ensure every eligible voter’s freedom to vote in every taxpayer-funded election

Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), along with Reps. Jared Golden (D-ME), Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA), are introducing the Let America Vote Act, which would abolish closed primaries nationally and ensure every eligible voter’s right to participate in every taxpayer-funded election.

Unite America Executive Director Nick Troiano issued the following statement in support of the bill:

“By abolishing closed primaries nationwide, the Let America Vote Act represents the single greatest expansion of voting rights in a half-century, since the Twenty-sixth Amendment lowered the voting age in 1971. At a time when a majority of voters identify as independent –– including a majority of veterans who fought for our country and a majority of young people who are the future of our country — it’s unconscionable that closed primaries deny nearly 24 million unaffiliated Americans the right to vote in taxpayer-funded elections this year. This Act would end taxation without representation once and for all, and ensure every voter, regardless of party, can fully exercise their right to vote.”

“We’re grateful to Reps. Fitzpatrick, Golden, Garbarino, and Gluesenkamp Perez for leading the charge in Congress to give voters more voice in our elections. With a record number of initiatives in states this November to open primaries, our movement continues to build momentum.”

Facts about America’s Primary Problem - the most solvable problem in politics today:

  • In 2022, 8% of eligible voters elected 83% of the U.S. House
  • So far in the 2024 primary season, 5% of eligible voters have elected 62% of the U.S. House.
  • 22 states hold closed primaries for Congress and/or president, which deny 23.5 million registered independents the right to fully exercise their right to vote.
